13 Reasons Why
You may have heard about the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. It is based on a young adult novel of the same name by Jay Asher. Due to its growing popularity right now, your child may be aware of this show.

There are many students watching and talking about this series, which includes graphic and mature issues including suicide, rape, drug use and bullying.  We are concerned about some of the feelings and questions this series may be raising for children, especially if they are watching alone. If your child has watched the series, he or she may need to talk with you about the confusing content.

CNN recently published an article about the series that may provide some context if you are not familiar.  http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/25/health/13-reasons-why-teen-suicide-debate-explainer/

There are several resources that may be helpful, and I am including an attachment to the email blast that includes some talking points.

National Association of School Psychologists have put together guidance for educators, families, and safe messaging for students.

Algebra Informational Meeting for Parents
On Monday evening we will be hosting an informational meeting for parents of current 6th and 7th graders who may be interested in taking High School Algebra early.  There are benefits and later consequences to this decision and we want to make sure you know the process for qualifying and the course of study for a student who takes Algebra early.  Taking Algebra early may be helpful for some students, but may not be in the best interest of all students.

2018 Travel Opportunity: D.C. and Philadelphia

It's not too early to start planning for Summer 2018!  Invitation letters were sent out to current 7th graders inviting them and their parents to attend an Interest Meeting on Thursday, May 4th, at 6:00pm in the Cafeteria.  EF Tours will be in hand to provide information about the itinerary for a 6-day trip in June 2018 to Washington DC and Philadelphia.  We hope to see you there!

Last Call for Yearbooks!!!
Monday, May 1 is the LAST DAY to purchase a yearbook online. We have only about 100 books remaining. Get yours for $45 from www.balfour.com before we sell out.

2017-18 HISD School Calendar
The calendar for next school year is available online.  Please note the first day of school is Monday, August 28, 2017.  I have been made aware that the Fall Holiday does not line up with Rosh Hashanah as it has in the past.  I will pass that information along to HISD Administration and will let you know if there is any change to the calendar.

Charger Camp dates are as follows:
6th grade Charger Camp - Tuesday, August 22, 2017, 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
8th grade Charger Camp - Wednesday, August 23, 2017, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
7th grade Charger Camp - Wednesday, August, 23, 2017, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Rule the School: Principal for the Day
Each year at the school auction one lucky person wins the chance to be the Principal for the Day.  This year, Coach Fujiwara and Ms. Coffman-Fujiwara won the spot and on Friday, Ms. Coffman-Fujiwara took the helm.

Here is what she wrote about the experience:
Thank you to the PTO and Mrs. Graves for offering "Rule The School" as one of the Flip Flop Fiesta Big Board Auction items!  This past Friday, I got to be "Principal for the Day!"  Needless to say, it was a very busy!  First thing in the morning, we made sure all classrooms had coverage for the day, then I got to help with the morning announcements. The Administrative Team meeting topic was "Structured Freedom," and we observed Mrs. Bowman delivering instruction in my classroom to see that the students were definitely engaged in an activity that promoted teamwork in a structured activity.  We got to observe several other classrooms and I definitely appreciate all of the kindness from the students!  While covering lunch duty from 11:35-1:50 isn't as glamorous as it sounds, I did get to talk with a number of Chargers!  Being an Administrator has never been on my radar, and this experience helped reinforce that my happiness is in the classroom, although it was A LOT of fun to evaluate my appraiser!!

Community Health Needs Assessment
Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, is partnering with the Houston Endowment to conduct a needs assessment of the physical, social, and mental health of children enrolled in the Houston Independent School District.  This partnership will not only determine the health needs of children within HISD, but through voluntary participation allows us to measure the needs within the Pin Oak community.  The Pin Oak community is very diverse, and does not qualify for any Title I funding, although many of our children meet the requirements to qualify for the National Free and Reduced Lunch Program.  This survey will allow us to determine the types of services necessary to improve the health of our entire community.  The ultimate goal of this survey is to develop a strategic plan to address the identified needs of children in Houston.

Students will take this survey at school before the end of the school year.

A Letter from your Student Body President:
Hi Pin Oak Parents!
On May 15th, Pin Oak will be hosting a Chick-Fil-A day.  As many of you know, Pin Oak elected its first POMS President and Vice President in November.  I, Tommy Lai, along with my running mate, McHaley Ho, was elected and ran on a platform of selling Chick-Fil-A during lunch.  On May 15th, our hard work will finally pay off with a day where we will be selling Chick-Fil-A during lunch.  But, parents, we need your help.  We will need parent volunteers to sell and distribute the food to students.  I hope you will be able to help with this historic date.  If you have some time and want to help, please email Ms. Ruiz at nruiz@houstonisd.org to let her know you want to help!

Thank You,
Tommy Lai

Houston Public Library Virtual Library Card
Every student at Pin Oak will have access to numerous library resources at school and home through a new virtual library card known as Learning Link.  Over the next few weeks students will visit the library during their history class, where Mrs. Welker with help them get connected.  The Learning Link, a collaborative effort between HISD, the Houston Public Library, the City of Houston and H-E-B as part of the White House ConnectED Challenge, will give our students access to the Houston Public library resources 24/7 at no cost.
Students are being automatically enrolled, and can use their student ID as their library account number to access these resources.

Course Selection for 2017-18
On Monday students in 6th and 7th grade will receive course selection sheets during Team Time.  They will be asked to complete and return the forms no later than Friday.  Please ask your child to see the course selection sheet and review it together.
Save the date! If you are interested in learning more about the process for identifying students for participation in early Algebra for high school credit, Dr. Hamilton and I will be hosting a meeting on May 1st at 6:30 p.m.

Intent to Return
Last week we mailed Intent to Return forms home to current 6th and 7th grade families.  Please complete the form and attach the required proof of residency, and return to the Main Office.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Gist in the Main Office.
If you haven’t received your form, you may need to update your mailing address with Ms. Gist.  We do require proof of residence to update your address.

Fitness Track Update
Last Chance to Purchase Your Paver!
Because of the incredible generosity of the Pin Oak community, we will be finalizing the details for construction of the 1/2 mile concrete fitness track that will encircle the POMS green space and athletic fields in the coming weeks.  We are thrilled to announce that we have cleared the permit process. Engraving request forms will be sent out next week. Construction will begin in June with the goal to finish the project before school begins in August.

You can still be part of this important project and have your name or personal message engraved in the paver walkway that will connect the existing walkway to the new concrete fitness track.  Make your donation today to secure your paver at http://pinoakpto.org/fitnesstrack/.

What is Pin Oak Idol?
Pin Oak Idol, a longstanding tradition at Pin Oak, is one of the most anticipated events each year.  Students have auditioned and been selected to compete for the title of Pin Oak Idol! Students may purchase tickets during the lunch periods this week!

Theatre Auditions
Auditions for next year’s Advanced and Intermediate theatre classes will be May 3 and 4 from 3:35-6:30 PM.  Students should pick up the audition packet from the Main Office or from Ms. Boffone in the Caja Negra.

Algebra Qualifier Test and Informational Meeting
Each year we identify students who would benefit from the opportunity to take Algebra before 9th grade.  Algebra is a high school course that starts the high school math sequence, but is sometimes offered to students in middle school.  At Pin Oak we use an assessment that measures Algebra readiness, and consider that information along with each student's performance history in mathematics.

Parents may join us Monday, May 1st at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the various course sequences for higher level mathematics and the process for identifying students for advanced math.

POMS Triathlon Team
The following students signed up for the Houston Texans Kids Triathlon and listed POMS as their team.  The Tri team is having shirts made and we don’t want to exclude anyone. Please look at this list and if your child’s name is missing, please email sandjmalin@hotmail.com and let her know.  The shirt order is due 4/23.

Spring Holiday

Many Thanks!
Thanks to the many volunteers who made our New Student Signing Day a success.  It is so nice that our incoming Chargers had an opportunity to meet so many students, parents and teachers.

ADVO This Week
We have seen an uptick in students reporting over-the-counter medications at school.  Most of what we are seeing is related to things that are seemingly harmless, but the conversation is leaving students confused. We will be addressing it this week in Advocacy, but I also want to call it to the attention of parents. It is a safety issue, and a violation of the code of conduct for students to have any type of medication on campus, including things like ibuprofen, cough drops, etc.  Please have a quick chat with your child to ensure he or she is not carrying anything in their purse, backpack or on their person.

In addition to some of the risks related to taking medications that have not been prescribed to you, we will also be addressing an increasingly more popular hazard among adolescents, e-cigarettes, or vaping.  There has been some chatter on campus about this and we feel like it is an important topic to tackle through ADVO, although this is covered each year in Health.  It is also an important topic for you to be aware of, and an important conversation for you to have with your child.

Here are a few resources that might help you better understand the risks your adolescent is facing:

Yearbook
The school year is drawing to a close and every year we completely sell out of our yearbooks. Currently, we have only 150 books remaining. If you don't want your child to be disappointed that they didn't get one, please purchase their copy today for $45 at www.balfour.com and make sure you receive an email confirmation from Balfour. If you don't receive the confirmation it means you did not complete the purchasing process.

8th gr T-Shirts
There are a few more class t-shirts available for our 8th graders.  Interested in purchasing a t-shirt? Contact Rebecca Kant at rebecca_kant@yahoo.com.

Jr. Cheer Clinic a Huge Success!
Saturday morning the Charger Cheerleaders hosted a Cheerleader for a Day clinic for 30 girls.  The Charger cheerleaders-in-training learned dances and cheers during the clinic.  The morning was topped off with a performance in front of their adoring fans.  The POMS Cheerleaders did an awesome job representing our school and our community.  Congratulations Charger Cheerleaders!

We Have A Winner!!

Grade 6 House C submitted a total of 581 boxtops between Nov 1 and April 1.  As appreciation for their efforts, we will be hosting a lunch on Friday, April 21 featuring Raising Cane’s chicken fingers, pizza, and dessert from Everything Bundt Cakes.
Thank you to all who have participated so far this year.  Every box top collected provides 10 cents to our school.  This money can add up quickly.  Please keep submitting your box tops.  We collect them all year round!!!

POMS Triathlon Team
Join the POMS Triathlon Team and help raise money for our new Track (no need to try out, everyone can join)-  Houston Texans Kids Triathlon May 21, 2017 at NRG.
Check out this race video to get an idea of what to expect — you will see some former and current POMS students.
The Senior Division ages (11-15) will swim 200M, bike 6 miles and run 1 mile on at their race on Sunday the 21st.  We will have team training to prepare your child!
Click this link to register for the race: http://www.imathlete.com/events/EventOverview.aspx?fEID=39267

NOTE: Make sure you email Julie at sandjmalin@hotmail.com to tell her that you have signed your child up for the race as she will be sending out periodic updates about training and race weekend.

Don’t forget to list POMS as your team! Siblings and former students can sign up for our team as well. We will receive $10/participant (as long as we have a minimum of 10) in an educational grant back to our school.  We will use $5/participant to help pay for our new track and the other $5/participant will go towards finding a cure for Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN).

Lexi Clark, a POMS 6th grader, has GAN.  Her family founded the group Justin’s TRIumph in 2012, which works in partnership with the non-profit Hannah’s Hope Fund, raising money to find a cure for GAN, a rare, fatal genetic disorder. Children with GAN are typically in wheelchairs by age 12. They later become quadriplegics and require the use of feeding tubes and ventilators. Life expectancy for kids with GAN is only into their 20’s.  To learn more about GAN, watch this short video http://vimeo.com/86083436

Lexi is doing the race and would love to have her fellow POMS students join her.
