A Letter from your Student Body President:
Hi Pin Oak Parents!
On May 15th, Pin Oak will be hosting a Chick-Fil-A day.  As many of you know, Pin Oak elected its first POMS President and Vice President in November.  I, Tommy Lai, along with my running mate, McHaley Ho, was elected and ran on a platform of selling Chick-Fil-A during lunch.  On May 15th, our hard work will finally pay off with a day where we will be selling Chick-Fil-A during lunch.  But, parents, we need your help.  We will need parent volunteers to sell and distribute the food to students.  I hope you will be able to help with this historic date.  If you have some time and want to help, please email Ms. Ruiz at nruiz@houstonisd.org to let her know you want to help!

Thank You,
Tommy Lai

Houston Public Library Virtual Library Card
Every student at Pin Oak will have access to numerous library resources at school and home through a new virtual library card known as Learning Link.  Over the next few weeks students will visit the library during their history class, where Mrs. Welker with help them get connected.  The Learning Link, a collaborative effort between HISD, the Houston Public Library, the City of Houston and H-E-B as part of the White House ConnectED Challenge, will give our students access to the Houston Public library resources 24/7 at no cost.
Students are being automatically enrolled, and can use their student ID as their library account number to access these resources.

Community Health Needs Assessment
Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, is partnering with the Houston Endowment to conduct a needs assessment of the physical, social, and mental health of children enrolled in the Houston Independent School District.  This partnership will not only determine the health needs of children within HISD, but through voluntary participation allows us to measure the needs within the Pin Oak community.  The Pin Oak community is very diverse, and does not qualify for any Title I funding, although many of our children meet the requirements to qualify for the National Free and Reduced Lunch Program.  This survey will allow us to determine the types of services necessary to improve the health of our entire community.  The ultimate goal of this survey is to develop a strategic plan to address the identified needs of children in Houston.

Students will take this survey at school before the end of the survey.

Please take time to complete this survey at

Principal’s School Satisfaction Survey
As I did last year, I want to hear from you!  Tell us what we are doing well, and what we need to improve.  Tell us what you think will improve teaching and learning for all our students.
Students will have an opportunity to give their feedback by completing a survey at school before the end of the school year.

You can complete the Principal’s School Satisfaction Survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3Z6NTK8

Course Selection for 2017-18
On Monday students in 6th and 7th grade will receive course selection sheets during Team Time.  They will be asked to complete and return the forms no later than Friday.  Please ask your child to see the course selection sheet and review it together.
Save the date! If you are interested in learning more about the process for identifying students for participation in early Algebra for high school credit, Dr. Hamilton and I will be hosting a meeting on May 1st at 6:30 p.m.

Intent to Return
Last week we mailed Intent to Return forms home to current 6th and 7th grade families.  Please complete the form and attach the required proof of residency, and return to the Main Office.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Gist in the Main Office.
If you haven’t received your form, you may need to update your mailing address with Ms. Gist.  We do require proof of residence to update your address.
